Making
a welcome return to the London Coliseum, director Chen Shi-Zheng follows
the critical success of his sumptuous staging of Orfeo with this highly
anticipated new production of Monteverdi’s last opera, The Coronation
of Poppea. Acclaimed for his graceful and fluid interpretation of
early works, Chen Shi-Zheng creates a beautiful production in which
Monteverdi’s masterful drama of lust and ambition triumphing
over reason is given a magical setting. Enriched by cinematic qualities,
it provides the perfect vehicle for the cream of young British talent
– Kate Royal, Anna Grevelius, Lucy Crowe and Doreen Curran as
Ottavia and Tim Mead – who are joined by two of Britain’s
most celebrated singers, Robert Lloyd and Diana Montague. Early music
specialist conductor Laurence Cummings resumes his successful partnership
with Chen Shi-Zheng.

INTERVIEW
ON RADIO eINS (BERLIN)
"WECK-ATTACK"
It's 5 a.m. London time, the day of the premiere and I am soo happy
to catch a bucket full of ZZZZ's after weeks of hard work on the
show.
For some reason my mobile never seems tired and a merciless ringing
and buzzing goes on and on for minutes in the middle of the night.
My subconsciousness is getting nervous now and tries to push me
out of my dreamless sleep. Half awake I am answering the phone only
to figure out I am in an live interview on Radion Eins.
CROSS CHANNEL + OVER SEA COMMUNICATION: WIKIMEDIA DATABASE The whole team was kind of spread across the world (LA,
NY, LND, BLN) in the early phase of the production. To communicate
as fast and easy as possible I decided to use a Wikimedia engine
as our creative headquarter and database in the web. Through all
the time zones and individual working rythmes everybody could check
out at any time the state of the video production, add comments
and suggestions.
The possibilities of interactive storyboards, it's non-linearity,
the user - as - author philosophy makes the Wikimedia Engine a fantastic
tool. Combined with a fast FTP server you can easily exchange and
visualize ideas and speed up the whole production process enormously.
PRE-RENDERING
VS. ON THE FLY EDITING
REALTIME
COMPOSITING: THE CATALYST SYSTEM
Working
for theatres and operas often means to make quick decisions on the
fly. This often is quite challenging for the artists especially if
you are working with video. Therefore we decided to follow two design
strategies: highly detailled and carefully edited moments and a more
commonly usable kit of bits, pieces and scenes of video that were
pre-selected and organized in a library.
The
whole video parts were played back on a cue to cue basis from a
catalyst system. Basic edits, masks and colors could be modified
during the rehearsals in realtime.
Hello and thanks to Rob, our operator!

Some of these logos are based on cheap flashing OPEN neon
signs I filmed in Berlin at a turkish take away place. Originally
they were used in a THE HOTEL visuals (Last Sight) but it turned out
that's it is a small step from OPEN to NERO.

These animations are based on my huge video texture pool

several visuals with it - there's endless possibilities with a good
pool of material.
